Short Bio


Gena Taylor Ellis is a daughter of Appalachia where storytelling is as old as the hills. She is a screenwriter and producer, author, journalist, army veteran and has been a background actor on TV shows, such as Nashville, Chicago Fire and Shameless. The background of life is where the best stories are mined, so Gena can be found there, digging up stories for her scripts, her blog, and even a novel in progress, plus giving seminars and workshops. Gena is from no-woman's land by the lake town of Summersville, WV. A Canvas Grade School alum, she is also a graduate of Marshall University and the University of Oklahoma. Gena Ellis is a screenwriter-producer and owner of Brown Dot Productions. She wrote and co-produced the award-winning film Angela's Decision, co-starring Xavier Samuel, and adapted  from her short story. The film won the Gold Australian Cinematographers Society Award, Tupelo's Ron Tibbett Best of Show award, and Houston's Gold Remi for Best Adaptation, and was adapted again for a TV pilot.


Gena's book, Angela's Decision: A Journey of Adaptation about the journey of the story to script to production in Australia is on Amazon, Barnes and Noble and other outlets. The book also includes the short story and entire script, plus act one of the TV pilot, in addition to more stories. University film programs have used her film and book to study adaptation, writing, and Indie film. Gena also wrote Rosa And The Black Tulip, based on Alexandre Dumas' The Black Tulip. The script has placed in many competitions, please see awards.


Gena has also been a background actor on TV's ​Nashville, Shameless, Chicago Fire, and Boss. Her films include the Bollywood hit Dhoom 3 and Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Gena also lectures and gives writing/film workshops, judges film festivals, and is an army veteran and journalist. Gena is a daughter of Appalachia, originally from the mountain lake town of Summersville, WV, where storytelling is as old as the hills. She has co-produced two films for her daughter, writer-director Ursula Ellis. The latest is Crick In The Holler, which was filmed in Gena's hometown area of WV and John's, and screens at The Lincoln Center in May 2017. Gena is an army veteran and journalist also.
